This presentation offers assessment professionals a practical case study in increasing fairness for Indigenous students during the development, review, and implementation of large-scale assessments.
The presenter will highlight methodologies implemented by EQAO including creating awareness in the workplace and operationalizing best practices for developing and reviewing items for cultural relevance and fairness, methodologies which align with recommendations from the ATP’s DEI in Testing Committee. Attendees will receive practical insights on strategies including:
· Creating a senior-executive-level position with a focus on equity;
· Establishing partnerships with members of Indigenous communities;
· Providing professional-learning sessions and activities to all staff to increase knowledge, understanding and empathy;
• Crafting training materials for assessment developers and reviewers designed to raise cultural awareness and responsiveness for Indigenous test-takers.
