Su Somay is a Lead Measurement Scientist in the Office of Research Strategy at NBME, where she designs and leads innovative initiatives at the intersection of psychometrics and medical education. Her work focuses on advancing validity-centered approaches to performance-based assessment, with particular emphasis on developing and evaluating complex constructs such as clinical reasoning, communication skills, and health systems science.
Her research integrates methodological rigor with principled assessment design, drawing on expertise in item response theory, Bayesian modeling, equating, automated scoring, and Evidence-Centered Design. She is particularly interested in how emerging technologies—including AI-enabled assessment systems—can be leveraged responsibly to enhance interpretability, scalability, and feedback while preserving defensible inferences in high-stakes contexts.
Su received her doctorate in psychometrics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and holds a master’s degree in social psychology from Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey.
