Name
Pre-Conference Workshop: Psychometrics 101: Demystifying Psychometrics One Question at a Time
Description

During this interactive workshop, you will be introduced to the fundamental principles of psychometrics and their relevance to test design, development, and administration. This session will:

  • Define psychometrics and highlight its significance in assessment development,
  • Present an overview of the assessment design and development process,
  • Clarify key concepts including validity, reliability, and fairness,
  • Examine requirements for designing, developing, and delivering assessments,
  • Introduce essential statistics (e.g., p-value, point biserial correlations, option analyses) that can help you evaluate question and assessment quality,
  • Review practical psychometric guidelines, and
  • Explain the context behind common statements made by psychometricians, such as “it depends.”

Understanding these concepts will provide the foundation to make more informed decisions that successfully balance psychometric standards with operational considerations (e.g., limited resources, time, budget, and legal risks) that you face the daily management of your program.

Attendees will be encouraged to ask questions and share relevant experiences throughout the session. You will leave this workshop with answers to your psychometric questions and the tools to engage in more constructive conversations with your psychometrician.
