Exam programs strive to reach as many candidates as possible. Cognitive or sensory constructs that are unaccounted for during exam creation can impact the validity and reliability of the assessment and can inadvertently exclude qualified candidates from obtaining licenses, certifications, or otherwise demonstrating mastery of a content domain.
This interactive workshop will explore the process of creating an accessible exam by considering the accommodation and accessibility needs of test-takers during exam development and will focus on accessibility considerations across two broad categories: 1) the accessibility of exam platforms, and 2) the accessibility of exam forms.
This post-ATP, interactive 2-hour workshop will begin with an overview of important accessibility and accommodation considerations relevant to all programs. Participants will then examine how these considerations relate to their own programs, identifying actionable next steps that they can implement within their contexts.
After this session, you will be able to:
- Identify key accessibility and accommodation considerations that impact the validity and reliability of exam delivery across diverse candidate populations.
- Recognize common barriers to accessibility and opportunities for improvement.
- Apply accessibility principles to your own exam programs and develop actionable strategies to improve the accessibility.
- Distinguish between accommodations and accessibility features and understand how each contributes to equitable testing experiences.
For those new to the concept, accessibility can seem like an insurmountable obstacle. This workshop will provide you with a broader perspective and appreciation for the topic of exam accessibility and encourage your efforts in creating a more accessible exam experience for all test takers.
