This presentation examines the integration of Generative AI in item writing, focusing on the development of new exam items and its impact on productivity, item review efficiency, and measurement performance. We will discuss pilot studies evaluating a new AI-assisted item writing tool designed to support subject matter experts (SMEs) in generating high-quality test items more efficiently. The studies assess the tools’ effectiveness in increasing item writing productivity, streamlining item review processes, and maintaining/improving the psychometric properties of AI-assisted items compared to traditionally written items. Attendees will gain insights into best practices for incorporating AI into the item development workflow, considerations for balancing human expertise with AI assistance, and the implications for the future of test development.
