Testing as Gateway or Gatekeeper? Ensuring Fair Access for All
John Kleeman
Description
Education and work are human rights. Testing holds the promise as a fair gateway to life chances. But in reality it doesn’t always work out that way. Some people get opportunity via testing; others, especially the less privileged and marginalized, can struggle due to testing limitations. This discussion session, facilitated by two experienced leaders in the ATP community, explores how we can make a better world where tests are fairer. Is it possible for the outcome of tests not to favor the privileged? Testing professionals are well intentioned. But testing is imperfect in the US and globally. The current social/political climate on this topic is highly polarized, but as professionals, we are still faced with ensuring that people are measured fairly, with integrity. Would alternative assessment formats, better guidance or communication help? Or what? This session will allow us to explore the issues and consider any potential actions our community can take to change the status quo.
