Breaking Barriers: Creating Flexible Assessment for Working Professionals in Vocational Education
Rakesh Sharma Andrew Walker
Description

In this session, we will discuss how TQUK, a leading UK Awarding and End-Point Assessment Organisation, transformed vocational assessment delivery to serve working professionals previously excluded by traditional testing models. Under Ofqual regulation, TQUK designed an alternative route to qualification, avoiding the rigid assessment windows to accommodate the real-world scheduling constraints of adult learners juggling full-time work and family commitments.
We will explore:
•The key barriers that prevented working professionals from accessing qualifications, and how TQUK and Excelsoft addressed them through the solution.
•How traditional assessment models disproportionately disadvantaged those in sectors facing critical skills shortages.
•TQUK's approach to maintaining regulatory rigour, exam security and reliability, while removing unnecessary obstacles in the old delivery method.
•TQUK’s approach to streamline the assessment lifecycle, deliver results faster and set industry benchmarks on results turnaround.
•The practical solutions they developed and their impact on learners, reduced exam anxiety, improved pass-rates.
•TQUK’s practical approach that impacted training providers, and helped reduce the administrative burden of exams and increase focus on training outcomes.
•How this model could address similar challenges facing learners and employers across Europe, and how getting learners qualified quickly could benefit employers in critical sectors of the European economy.
The session will explore both the human impact and technical implementation, providing practical insights for organisations seeking to make assessment more inclusive without compromising exam integrity, standards or regulatory compliance.
