Beyond the Test: Building a Balanced Assessment System in the Age of AI
Description

More testing does not necessarily produce better information. A balanced assessment system ensures that formative, diagnostic, interim, and summative assessments each serve a clear purpose and support teaching, learning, and program decisions. This session provides a practical framework for evaluating assessment purpose, alignment, accessibility, timing, and use across pre-K through higher education. Participants will examine common system imbalances and apply a decision-focused audit to identify what to keep, revise, add, or remove. The session will demonstrate an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled assessment system audit tool that guides education agencies and institutions through questions about current practices and generates tailored feedback on strengths, redundancies, gaps, and priorities. Rather than a generic checklist or score, the tool produces district-specific insights and prioritized recommendations for creating a more coherent, equitable, and instructionally useful assessment system.
