Reimagining Assessment: A Human-Centered, Culturally Responsive Approach
April Petronella
Description
Exams are designed to measure human knowledge, but sometimes our test development process focuses more on content than the actual humans whom the exam is designed to serve. Two distinct but complimentary approaches can help us re-center our focus on the people we benefit through assessment: human-centered design and culturally responsive assessment. In this vignette-based mock case-study presentation, we will provide attendees with a brief overview of human centered design and the qualities of culturally responsive assessment. We will then introduce the hypothetical case of an organization developing a new assessment product that they hope to make culturally responsive. Attendees will follow the organization’s use of human-centered design from start to finish as various individuals and teams working on this project use this approach to ensure their assessment design and delivery adheres to its goal of cultural responsiveness.
