Assessment professionals have long relied on quantitative methods to develop assessments and evaluate their efficacy, validity, and accessibility. While such methods provide important data, they may overlook insights such as representation, context, emotions, and attitudes in the user experience. Minimum sample size requirement may also limit quantitative analyses for certain populations. Qualitative methods can complement quantitative methods by focusing on human stakeholders and their lived experiences, which can aid in achieving greater equity in assessment. Panelists will debunk misconceptions related to qualitative methods and introduce test development professionals to methods useful in developing and evaluating equity in assessments such as focus groups, interviews, content analysis, and thematic analysis. They will also provide concrete strategies to ensure these methods are applied in a rigorous and credible manner to drive validity.
